Let’s design out waste!

Library of things

We’re currently working with the City of London and local residents to launch a Library of Things this Spring: an easy, affordable way to access tools and equipment rather than buying new. This is part of a wider effort to help our community reduce waste, save money, improve recycling, and strengthen local resource sharing, in partnership with the Barbican Library.

We invite residents to join us

We’re inviting residents to join us for four workshops across January to come and share their thoughts and experiences around managing waste, and help us shape what the Library of Things could look like. Whether it’s confusion about what can be recycled or not having the right tools to repair everyday items, we’d love to hear about your experiences.

Co-creation labs

We are using co-creation labs as a method for this work, putting the voices of residents right at the core of the conversation. These are hands-on workshops where residents use physical models to express experiences and explore solutions. This collaboration provides valuable insights for redesign. A key component is co-discovery, a moderated, collaborative setting where residents and clients explore a topic. Discussion is sparked by participants triggering each other, and the combination of group activities and individual assignments generates in-depth, context-specific data. Labs also involve speculation, using current desires and struggles to imagine the future. Storytelling, often aided by specialised tools, is central to exploring future scenarios. Labs can combine both co-discovery and speculation stages.

Some examples of projects we’ve worked on:
