Paving the Way for Ethical AI Integration

A new article by Stby titled “Paving the Way for Ethical AI Integration: How design research can help guide meaningful decisions” was published in the recent Service Design Network’s Touchpoint issue about Service Design at the Dawn of AI. Written by creative director Bas Raijmakers and design researcher Katy Barnard, the article explores how the human-centred and exploratory approach of design research can help navigate big tech transitions in a way that respects people.

Stby has aided organisations in many large technological shifts over the last 20 years, including internet services arriving on mobile phones, wearables breaking into the market, the shift to hybrid working during covid-19 and now the introduction of generative AI in the workplace. The article uses case studies to explore each of these transitions and the qualitative research approaches we used to help our clients make ethical, informed and human-centred design decisions.

The article closes with our ideas around where design research is most needed in the AI transition right now. A lot of focus is going into the technological possibilities of AI, but much more attention needs to go into understanding how, when and where people want AI to exist in their lives. This is where design research can help.
