Routing Around: Working with Cisco to discover what people want technology to look like

What should a router look like? That was the question STBY were recently asked by Cisco…

Aligning propositions: How video helps Nokia to match services to customer needs

Nokia commissioned STBY to work together on a series of projects that enabled them to gradually align their research and development processes around principles of design research. The latest of these projects saw STBY prepare and facilitate a collaborative alignment workshop focused on the consumer solutions videos produced by STBY for Nokia in early 2010.

Design Research for Service Innovation

Our creative research projects connect service providers with the lives and experiences of their customers. This helps our clients to innovate their service offering, making it more valuable for both their customers and business. Our projects generate rich and visually illustrated research materials that bring real people into the heart of design and innovation processes.

Helping parents to advise and support

Building on the results of a previous study, STBY were asked by DUO/IB-Groep in the Netherlands to examine the ways in which parents support their children once they enter higher education. DUO/IB-Groep wanted to explore the needs of parents for services specifically tailored to them.

Living Well in Cornwall

STBY were asked by Dott Cornwall – a Design Council body who promote design-led solutions to economic and social problems – to investigate what could be done to support sustainable living in Cornwall. The project initially focused on whether a new ‘Centre for Sustainable Living’ was needed in order to support the transition to sustainability throughout the region.

Personal storytelling with video

STBY recently produced a series of films for Nokia, documenting the ‘solutions’ people improvise to a range of situations in their everyday lives. These films are to be used in Nokia’s internal ideation and design processes, where they allow various departments to connect with the lives of consumers.

Remote services for older people

For a consortium of public sector organisations in The Netherlands STBY is working on a user-driven innovation proces aiming to develop new remote services that support older people to live independently at home. Moving to a retirement home is not something most older people are looking forward to. Luckily nowadays, it is possible to get a lot of care and support at home. Remote services have a potential to offer people a maximum of flexibility and independence. In every stage of this project people from the target group, older people and their carers, have been involved in order make sure the team works with their perspective firmly in mind.

Personas to inform and inspire service innovation

In a follow-up project to the early explorations in 2009, STBY was asked to develop a series of personas for Southern Water. Again, we worked closely together with the Design Council team on this project. We conducted an in-depth ethnographic study among 23 households in South East England, identified 4 distinct personas, and visualised those in a series of videos and a full colour A2 poster.

Service Experience Lab on mobile internet

Together with the Creation Centre of T-Labs (part of Deutsche Telekom in Berlin) STBY organised and facilitated a Service Experience Lab in London. In a full day programme product managers from T-Mobile’s British and German teams interacted with a group of consumers and discussed ideas for the next step in mobile internet services.
