{"id":5026,"date":"2014-09-29T16:22:02","date_gmt":"2014-09-29T15:22:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.stby.eu\/?p=5026"},"modified":"2015-09-11T16:39:18","modified_gmt":"2015-09-11T14:39:18","slug":"belonging-belongings-book","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.stby.eu\/wp_15\/2014\/09\/29\/belonging-belongings-book\/","title":{"rendered":"Belonging &#038; Belongings workbook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This summer, we\u2019ve been working to complete a final book that compiles our artistic design research activities and materials from the <a href=\"http:\/\/stbyblogs.eu\/Belonging-Belongings\/\">Belonging &amp; Belongings<\/a> research programme, from 2007 to 2011. The book is rich in imagery, reflecting our visual research approach, and includes photographs, magazines, and film stills from the various studies we carried out in both Japan and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n<p>We see the book as a \u2018workbook,\u2019 in that it brings together selected research materials from the programme in a meaningful way and contextualises them in references drawn across literature, media, and fine arts. We used these research materials and references to explore the concept of \u2018socio-techno styles,\u2019 generating 18 \u2018tags\u2019 to help make sense of the visual data we gathered. The book can be seen as an introduction into what artistic research can bring to design research, with the Belonging &amp; Belongings programme acting as a Research &amp; Development lab for STBY.<\/p>\n<p>These 18 \u2018tags\u2019 are scattered throughout the book, each focusing on a particular concept or theme that emerged through the patterns and connections we observed in our research materials. Each tag, such as \u2018sartorial appearance\u2019 or \u2018on \/ offline,\u2019 is explored in-depth through a relevant quote, contextual definition, and other reference sources for you to explore, ranging from photography projects to news articles.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.stby.eu\/wp_15\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/BBBook6Photo.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter  wp-image-5028\" src=\"https:\/\/www.stby.eu\/wp_15\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/BBBook6Photo.jpg\" alt=\"Belonging &amp; Belongings2\" width=\"553\" height=\"415\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.stby.eu\/wp_15\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/BBBook6Photo.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.stby.eu\/wp_15\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/BBBook6Photo-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Five essays included in the book are based off of a paper we wrote for the IASDR Conference in Tokyo in 2013, titled \u2018Belonging &amp; Belongings: Design Research Through Visual Explorations\u2019 (which can be found <a href=\"https:\/\/www.stby.eu\/wp_15\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/2141-2_submission_IASDR2013.pdf\">here<\/a>).
