Design Driven Business Innovation

Following on the success in previous years, STBY again co-organised and co-lectured the third edition of this 8-week master course at the Business School of the University of Amsterdam. Together with Dr. Wietze van der Aa, we supervised 35 international business and management students who are all keen to immerse themselves in a more Design-Driven and Human-Centered approach to Business Innovation.

Exchange about state of the art service innovation

We were honoured to welcome a delegation of Japanese business visitors to our office in Amsterdam. They were interested to learn more about our pioneering work as design researchers for service innovation. We shared our vision on the current state of the art in the field, as well as some emerging trends we observe in the context of our work.

In-house Service Design training

As more and more organisations are discovering the merits of service design and design thinking, and they embark on a process of realigning their service offering and internal procdures, they have a need for speicalised staff training. STBY has worked with a several companies on in-house training events that varied from a half day seminar to a 10 week series of themed workshops.

Improving bicycle parking at train stations

Bicycle parking at train stations in big cities is an increasing problem in the Netherlands. A lot of travellers park their bikes along the streets and footpaths around the train station. In many places this causes a huge mess, with bikes standing in the way of pedestrians, and cyclists scrambling to find a place for their bike. At the same time existing indoor bicycle storage spaces around the stations are underused. This is an issue for municipal authorities as well as for NS and Prorail (the main train operator and rail infrastructure company in the country), and also for the association of cyclists. They jointly decided to invest in improving the situation and come up with a new concept for bicycle parking at stations that could cater for everyone. To inspire and facilitate the conversations between the different stakeholders, STBY was asked to investigate and represent the perspective of cyclists on this matter.

What can we learn from lead patients using wearables?

The Dutch Ministery of Public Health advocates an increased focus on e-health, with the aim that more and more people will monitor and manage their healthy lifestyles through using smart technologies. One of the strategic goals is for 75 percent of patients with chronic diseases to use self-measurement technologies as part of their everyday lives within 5 years. To reach this goal, it is necessary to better understand and cater for the needs of these patients. It is important to enable their self-sufficiency, while preventing a mere technology push that would incur unnecessary costs and resistance to usage.

Family Oriented Services

STBY has recently completed a design research project for an international communications company focusing on family oriented services. Successful family oriented services can already be found in many industries, from banking to utilities. They are seen as a very effective way to satisfy and retain customers. While the family oriented concept has been widely used by marketeers and advertisers in the past, designers and strategists need a deeper understanding of the information flows, habits and motivations of individuals within a household – a very special context. Design Research and UX Research on App Store Usage

Very recently we were challenged to imagine a research project to support the development of a new app store design that could combine design research and UX research.

Working together with Google

STBY and Google have recently completed a 6 month collaboration. Together with a new product development team at Google, STBY conducted two design research projects.

Developing the DIY Toolkit for Social Impact

We are very happy to have worked with our Indian REACH partner Quicksand, Nesta (UK’s Innovation foundation), and the Rockefeller foundation on the DIY Toolkit for social impact. The aim of the toolkit is to support and increase the innovation capacity of international development practitioners.

Service Design in Practice

STBY is proud contributor to the book ‘Service Design: Insights from nine practices’ that has recently been translated to English. This book is the  result of a three year service innovation programme ‘Service Design in Practice’, funded by the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs, the municipality of Utrecht and the Utrecht province. The book was edited by academic researchers from TU Delft and Hogeschool Utrecht, who followed the proceedings of a series of case study projects.
