Quicksand Celebrates 10 Years

Our REACH partners Quicksand are celebrating their 10 year anniversary, and we wanted to congratulate them on these years of remarkable design research work and innovative projects. Their projects, such as Project Sammaan, tackle complex issues like sanitation systems in India’s urban slums, and approach them with an innovative lens using design research methods.

DIY Toolkit

Initiated by Nesta and made possible by The Rockefeller Foundation, STBY and Quicksand have edited and designed the DIY Toolkit. DIY stands for ’Development Impact and You’. The toolkit is primarily meant for practitioners in international development, but can be used by anyone who feels they can benefit from it. It contains a set of 30 best in class and proven tools that aim to trigger and support social innovation. Every tool has a concise description, a downloadable worksheet and some practical instructions to get you started. The toolkit is published under a creative commons license and therefore freely available […]

Defining ‘Smart’: Using Video to Explore Smartphone Usage

Do people in different countries have different ideas as to what a smartphone can do for them? In the latest of a series of projects conducted for a major telecoms company, STBY have just finished an in-depth international study that used video to explore what role smartphones have in peoples everyday lives. We constructed a series of design documentaries that provide vivid insights into the various things people do – or at least try to do – using their phones.   Conducted as a series of discrete studies within particular time-constraints, this project was an excellent example of how […]

GOOD’11 Programme Released!

With a month to go before our first conference ‘The Great Outdoors of Design’ gets underway, the full list of topics we’ll be looking at has now been finalised. Our intention with this event has always been to aim for a more intimate and collaborative atmosphere than is found at many conferences; we really want to explore these issues in conjunction with our attendees – not just stand there on the stage talking about them. All of the topics are collected around two main themes, both of which we think are right at the heart of Design Research: How can […]

Investigating Written Communication: Working With Reach in Telecoms to Find Global Common Ground

Do different people in different companies have the same conversations? Is the language people use influenced by context, culture, technology – or even a mixture of all three?

Global Design Research

Being known as a world-class specialist in Design Research, many of our clients have asked us to deliver this kind of research on an international scale. Rather than developing this as an in-house service, we have initiated a global network with other specialists in design research around the world.

Design research in Brazil

Geke and Bas have been in Brazil for a few weeks, traveling across the country visiting friends at our partner company Feel the Future and elsewhere. The vibe in Brazil is different from Europe we feel, in that there is a clear understanding here that the economy needs innovation to spur its growth, and that design has to play a vital role in that growth.
