Belonging & Belongings workbook

Belonging & Belongings is a compilation of our artistic design research activities and materials from a research programme we have worked on together with Dr Daijiro Mizuno, from 2007 to 2011. The book is rich in imagery, reflecting our visual research approach, and includes photographs, magazines, and film stills from the various studies we carried out in both Japan and the United Kingdom. The book can be seen as an introduction into what artistic research can bring to design research, with the Belonging & Belongings programme acting as a Research & Development activity for STBY. The five essays included in […]

What can we learn from lead patients using wearables?

The Dutch Ministery of Public Health advocates an increased focus on e-health, with the aim that more and more people will monitor and manage their healthy lifestyles through using smart technologies. One of the strategic goals is for 75 percent of patients with chronic diseases to use self-measurement technologies as part of their everyday lives within 5 years. To reach this goal, it is necessary to better understand and cater for the needs of these patients. It is important to enable their self-sufficiency, while preventing a mere technology push that would incur unnecessary costs and resistance to usage.

Family Oriented Services

STBY has recently completed a design research project for an international communications company focusing on family oriented services. Successful family oriented services can already be found in many industries, from banking to utilities. They are seen as a very effective way to satisfy and retain customers. While the family oriented concept has been widely used by marketeers and advertisers in the past, designers and strategists need a deeper understanding of the information flows, habits and motivations of individuals within a household – a very special context. STBY helped one of our clients by designing and conducting a generative design research […]

Learning by Doing workshop at STBY

Recently STBY hosted an intimate DIY session with innovation professionals from different sectors, as a brief introduction to the DIY Toolkit. The hands-on workshop served as an introduction to the toolkit by exploring a small selection of tools. These had been adapted to fit within the format of the workshop. The tools also served as a way of showing how the tools can be re-purposed and adjusted to fit within an organisation’s bespoke needs. The DIY Toolkit had been created with the aim to secure the long term impact and change. What makes this toolkit special is that it includes […]
