Fun at Villiers Highschool

Bas_villiersDuring the 60-hour Design Challenge at the Villiers Highschool in Southall London, we coached the design teams in using video as a tool for their research. During the periods that they were working on their prototypes in the main studio, we were free to explore the school environment and film the daily dynamics of this UK teenage community.

This was big fun. The school kids were very responsive to the camera. They were curious to know what we were filming and were not shy to give us all sorts of directions on what to film and how. This project was a very nice mix of work and just hanging out and having fun.

While the role of ‘design researcher’ becomes more common and recognised as a formal position in many different types of organisations, it’s worth reflecting on how we all work and the unique skills and attitudes needed in different settings.
