STBY will facilitate a workshop at the upcoming Creative Company Conference on 14 September 2010 in Haarlem, The Netherlands. The core themes of the conference this year are Service Design, Design Thinking and innovation and entrepreneurship in the creative industries.

The title and astract for the workshop are:

Creative Research for Service Design
Case studies of successful Service Design and Innovation show that they have been informed and inspired by empathic conversations with the people the services are ultimately catering for. These conversations take place throughout the service design process and make use of co-creative, qualitative research methods. In contrast to traditional market or user research, this form of research is firmly embedded in the creative process. As one of the leading specialists in creative research for service design and innovation, STBY will share its experiences with a particularly succesful method: design documentaries.

Belonging & Belongings is research project with a multi-disciplinary approach. It explores how people express their multiple identities using fashion and communication technologies. What makes people feel they belong to a certain group of people, and how do their belongings (physical and virtual, garments and media) express this belonging?

This project is an international and multi-disciplinary research, initiated by dr Daijiro Mizuno (Critical Design Lab at Kyoto University of Art and Design) and dr Geke van Dijk and dr Bas Raijmakers (STBY design research London/Amsterdam).

Orchestrated by the 27th region, this event intended to precede the annual «Congrès des Régions» with a creative push.
This backcasting exercice started with a TV news bulletin from 2028, announcing, amongst other things, the visit of elected members from le Grand Paris to le Plateau des 1000 Vaches (region Limousin), to study new forms of rural social innovation. We also celebrate the 10th birthday of the first ‘multimodal food pole’: the time when local food growing associations were marginals is definitely over.
Those stories tackle different social and economic issues in which the regions have a crucial role to play: education, citizenship, governancy, participation… but also energy, food, transport, infrastructure, technologies. How did that happen? From this vision of a desirable future, the game for the participants was to propose three innovations to make it possible, in a perspective of 5, 10 or 20 years.

After several hours of intense debate, meters of paper covered with post-its and photo-montages, about thirty ideas were presented, including… a Tour de France for the elected representatives, going in «residence» in other territories. A «trans-regional» passeport, reshaping citizenship and public involvement on a local (trans-regional) scale. A welcome kit for new habitants in rural areas…

The day was also the occasion to make a half way bilan of Territoire en résidence: a program of local experimentations, which the 27th region started in november 2008. So far, 7 residences have been realised, asking a pluri-disciplinary team (designers, ethnographers, architects, local stakehloders…) to work for 3 weeks in a place or an institution that represent a specific challenge for the region, and to propose several leads of action. The residences are constantly documented on a blog. And there is also video on You Tube about the event.

Bas Raijmakers (STBY) and Andreas Sommerwerk (Deutsche Telekom AG) jointly presented a paper at the second international Service Design Network conference in Madeira on 26 October 2009. The title of the paper is “How sticky research drives service design”. It was also co-authored with Indri Tulusan of Spur, Julia Leihener, co-director with Andreas of the Creation Center in Berlin, and Geke van Dijk. The paper tells the story of how we used little movies throughout a design process for new concepts that enhance community interaction on mobile phones. The paper can be downloaded from our Publications section.

The full agenda of the conference (including presentations and workshop notes from Adaptive Path, live|work, UsCreates, Nokia Design, IDEO, and Engine) is still available from the conference website.

Bas co-authored the paper “Thinking and Doing Ethnography in Service Design” with Fabian Segelström and Stefan Holmlid of Linköping University in Sweden for the IASDR 2009 conference in Seoul, 18-22 Oct. Unfortunately we can’t be there ourselves, but we will post the paper in our publications section immediately after the conference. Our paper is presented in the session “Adopting rigor in Service Design Research” on Monday morning. The conference has a strong program with friends from TU Delft, Nokia Design and sedes research giving tutorials.

We were invited to present the work we did for Heartlands (Cornwall) at the annual conference on spatial planning (Ruimteconferentie 2009, 3 November 2009), organised by the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency (Planbureau voor de Leefomgeving). The workshop Geke presented our work in was titled “Beyond the dichotomy city-countryside”. She presented the Heartlands project as a case study to illustrate how local communities and future users can be effectively involved in the regeneration of a large area including both urban conglomerates and rural areas.

STBY was invited by David Hamers, who works for the Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency and has recently been appointed as Lector Stad & Land at the Design Academy in Eindhoven.

The keynote lecture at the conference was by Caroline Steel. She is the author of the book ‘Hungry City. How food shapes our lives‘. In the keynote and the book she points to the feeding of cities as one of the great challenges of our time. It has a strong social and physical impact on us and our planet, yet few of us are fully aware of it. In respons to this challenge she introduces the concept of ‘Sitopia’ of ‘Food place’ (based on the ancient Greek; sitos = food and topos = place). A very interesting talk, and surely a fascinating book.

Geke participated in a workshop on Service Design at the HCI2009 conference in Cambridge. The participants had a wide range of backgrounds (service systems, service design, services marketing) which resulted in an interesting exchange of references and perspectives. This year’s workshop followed on a previous, similar meeting at the HCI2008 conference in Liverpool. Both workshops were organised by Peter J. Wild from Cambridge University.

Geke’s contribution to the workshop was a reflection on Service Design for the Public Sector. Over the past 6 months STBY has been engaged in quite a few Service Design projects for the public sector, both in The Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In her presentation Geke gave some examples from recent projects and ended with a slide summing up our reflections on these projects:

- Despite being a service-based sector, there is not a strong tradition of user-centered design and innovation in the Public Sector.
- An open dialogue with consumers needs to be set up and nurtured from both sides. Empatic conversations are crucial to understanding.
- It is important to involve the client team in throughout the process. Both to observe during the home visits, and to co-create insights and ideas during the analysis stage.
- It is important to show the benefits of not immediately jumping to solution-driven thinking. First explore what the problems, needs and opportunities are. Allow time and space for some discovery research.
- It is not sufficient to only focus on the consumer perspective. Also involve the people-facing-professionals in an organisation. They are an important source of knowledge and are also ‘users’ of the services.
- Video and other visual material help strongly to reveal and communicate the points of view of consumers. This makes the insights much more personal, more empathic, and difficult to ignore.
