The book’s been given the Gold Award for Best Layout at the European Design Awards 2011. Though we’d like to claim credit, in truth this is all down to the super-talented Jakob Schneider, who was responsible for the design of the whole book. We’ve recently run a number of Service Design Talk sessions in London where Jakob and Marc have been kind enough to join in via Skype, and it’s great to see that the feedback people have been giving us here is reflective of a wider appreciation of what the book has tried to do. Well done to all involved!

Following in the footsteps of the successful series of Service Design Talks held in Amsterdam over the past two years, we are happy to announce the first Service Design Talks event in London: On Wednesday 22 March all interested in reflecting on practices and theories of Service Design are warmly invited to get together to discuss the book ‘This Is Service Design Thinking’.

We are aware that it is a bit cheeky to propose a book that we have ourselves contributed to, but we honestly believe that this book is worth discussing. Everyone is free to be critical as you want to. In fact this is really appreciated!

Marc Stickdorn and Jakob Schneider, the initiators and main authors & designer, have agreed to take part in the session from Austria via Skype, which is great. We are looking forward to a lively interactive session.

Everyone interested, and around in London on 22 March, is welcome to join us.
Please RSVP through Eventbrite (only 20 places available): http://servicedesigntalkslondon.eventbrite.com/

Location: STBY studio, London Fruit & Wool Exchange, Brushfield Street, London E1 6AA (big building between The Gun pub and Barclays branch)
Time: 19:00 – 21:30

Make sure to order the book in time (=NOW) and to read it in advance!

Tip: Don’t miss the opportunity to get a 20% discount, by using the promotion code the publisher has kindly offered. Just go to http://order.thisisservicedesignthinking.com and enter the code ’11TDS36′.

Hope to see you on 22 March!

Geke van Dijk

STBY magazine offers a collection of case study based stories, intended to introduce both the theory and practice of the emerging fields of design research and service design. The contents is based on the work of STBY, being one of the leading pioneers in both these fields. The magazine shows what the projects were able to deliver – and a glimpse of the potential design research has to offer for service design in the future.

For the book This is Service Design Thinking, recently published by BIS Publishers, Geke van Dijk contributed a chapter on design ethnography, in addition to the toolbox STBY edited for the book. Design Ethnography aims to understand the future users of a design, such as a certain service. It is a structured process for going into depth on the everyday lifes and experiences of the people a design is for. The aim is to enable the design team to identify with these people; to build up an empathic understanding of their practices and routines, and what they care about. This allows the team to work from the perspective of these users on new designs for relevant slices of their daily lives. Designers use this understanding to work on idea generation, concepts development and implementations. (PDF, 111 kb)

“This is Service Design Thinking”, a book STBY recently collaborated on with Marc Stickdorn and Jakob Schneider, has now been released. The book is intended to be the first comprehensive overview of the service design field. Designed to be a useful resource for teachers, students, and anyone else who wants to try applying service design principles to their own work, it explains in detail how the field has developed – and how it’s still growing.

STBY made two substantial contributions to the book. For the first, we were asked to edit the section detailing the kind of methodological tools service designers use. When putting this together, we tried to keep the emphasis on these tools being something practical that people can use themselves. Our idea was that we were presenting a ‘toolbox’ that people could turn to when looking for inspiration for their own projects.

We also contributed a chapter on design ethnography, which is one of the key foundations of our own work. In the chapter we were able to expand a little more on some of the thinking behind this approach, and how it enables us to translate experiences from everyday life into inspiring and engaging research materials.

Overall, we’re extremely pleased with how the book turned out. It’s available now, and by visiting the publisher’s website (http://order.thisisservicedesignthinking.com) and entering the code ’11TDS36′, you can obtain a 20% discount on the cover price. And if you do order a copy, don’t forget to drop us a line and let us know what you think!

STBY recently contributed a chapter to a brand new book on service design: This is Service Design Thinking. In the spirit of service design, the book is a truly collaborative effort – 23 international authours came together to try and describe and illustrate this rapidly emerging field. 3 of these authours were from STBY; Bas, Geke and Luke put together a ‘toolbox’ chapter, describing when, how, and why you should use 25 of the most popular tools being used by service designers in the field today. In addition, Geke’s chapter on ethnography is one of 5 such chapters that examine how the various fields involved in service design come together.

In addition to this the book also contains a general introduction to the field based around 5 general principles, a step-by-step description of the typical process involved in a service design project, and a series of case studies examining success stories from out in the field.

The book’s a great introduction to the field for beginners and students alike, and is set to be release this December. Pre-order now and you can receive a discount of 30% on the sale price of 45 Euros. Simply enter the code 10SD3011 when ordering from the publishers homepage.

And don’t forget to tell us what you think of the chapter!

As one of the first companies to begin creating projects around the principles of design research and service design, STBY have been intimately involved with the ongoing development of these fields of work. We’ve written papers, magazine and book chapters, founded collaborative and information-sharing networks, and given talks at national and international conferences all across the world. This involvement with design research and service design’s continued evolution keeps us at the forefront of the field, as through our work we’re helping to define it.

Pioneers in the service design community

Founded in 2003, STBY was one of the first agencies to conduct design research projects based on the service design philosophy. Our involvement with the user-centered design community dates back even earlier, as our founders have been active in this field since its gradual emergence at the end of the last century.

Service design isn’t ‘owned’ by any one individual or company; it’s an approach that’s founded on the notion of sharing information and developing approaches collaboratively. The projects that STBY conduct are based around this multi-disciplinary field that we’re helping to co-define. We’re constantly adapting new theories and techniques into our fieldwork, and providing feedback as to what works and what doesn’t via publications and conference presentations.

World class connectors

Collaboration and knowledge sharing is the principle underpinning the Service Design Network Netherlands, which STBY initiated and co-founded in 2008. The network allows companies, students, and individuals interested in service design to connect with each other, share ideas, and help define and refine the processes and tools which the approach employs. We’re also long-standing members of the international Service Design Network. We’re regular contributors to their quarterly magazine, Touchpoint, and we’ve given keynote presentations at conferences in various countries. Through our global design research network REACH we have been engaged in presentations on for service providers as far abroad as Japan and Brazil.

To be at the forefront of service design, we feel that it’s essential to be active members of the community that surrounds it. This means we don’t just apply service design principles – we also help develop and refine them, and thus have an intimate understanding of this rapidly developing field.

Looking to the future: helping companies adopt the service design philosophy

As we work towards our first decade of experience in designing and conducting service design projects, we’re beginning to build up long-term relationships with several companies attempting to re-orientate their research programs around service design principles. With several years of experience in running collaborative workshops with companies eager to learn more about how to use the evocative and engaging research materials we produce, we’re ideally placed to assist those organisations looking to implement their own service design programs.
