Emilie Randoe (1963) is founder and director of Randoe Verandermanagement, a company specialized in enabling people to organize change in organizations or in networks of co-creation. Randoe Verandermanagement works for a variety of clients in sectors such as education, design, creative industry).
Randoe Verandermanagement discerns three different levels of change: improvement, renewal and transformation. The company offers a specific approach for each level.
All levels of change have in common that you need a story about the necessity for change and about the benefits of the desired results that makes sense to people who are directly concerned by the change. That story can be created by unleashing the tacit knowledge that people within companies have about the needs of clients and about the developments in markets. In order to make the desired change really happen, it is critically important to work at the same time on the question how the organization usually deals with change and to identify mechanisms that effectively prevent change from happening. At this stage people responsible for management and execution within the company need to collaborate closely together and understand their specific roles and perspectives in order to be successful. B y collaborating with STBY, Emilie hopes to contribute to the development of effective teams that can reach their goals and possibly even more than that.

STBY have recently hosted interns at both our UK and Amsterdam offices. Though we don’t run a formal internship programme, we’re always interested in hearing from bright, enthusiastic, creative students who want to learn more about design research and service design. This usually takes between 4-6 months, as we like our interns to be involved in all aspects of what we do; once you’re comfortable with the basics, we’ll ask you to contribute to one of our ongoing projects.

If you’d like to know more then send some examples of your work along with a short introduction to mail@stby.eu, and let us know whether you’re interested in interning in Amsterdam or in London. Ideally you should have some background experience in both design and research, but if you think you could contribute in another way then let us know how.

The University of Amsterdam is developing a new online portal for its services to students. This portal offers access to all information related to the courses students are involved in (e.g. assignments, online work space, marks) and the general services of the university (e.g. library, news, email). The existing portal will be replaced by a new and customised system that better integrates the various information sources and offers more flexibility in use.

Thoughout the development of the new portal there are many aspects that benefit from empathic conversations with students about their needs and preferences. The University of Amsterdam asked STBY to facilitate these conversations.

In a series of meetings over the course of a few months we prepared and moderated interactive sessions where students from various departments responded to the concepts an ideas for the new portal. Based on their current use of the existing portal these students are well informed on what works best for them, and what not. On top of that most of them have extensive experience with relevant other online services. Being highly opinionated and committed users of the internet, they were keen to express the things they love, hate, miss or can do without. The feedback sessions led to abundant food for thought for the project staff, which is exactly what they wished for!

With a fascination for technology and innovation, she started her career at the University of Amsterdam as the coordinator of the UvAweb2000 were she supported both the technical development as well as the user involvement around themes like on-demand content and personalisation.

Karien moved to IRP, where she coordinated similar developments of user-centred CMS systems. Here she was also closely involved in setting up the MMBase foundation; the first Dutch, community-led, open source development foundation. Continuing in digital innovation she worked as a project leader on online strategies at a leading digital marketing agency for clients like Microsoft, Boots and L’Oreal.

In recent years her focus has gradually shifted towards creative technology for social innovation. As the Manager of the Creative Learning Lab at Waag Society, she led research projects and managed the development of concepts and prototypes. Her projects ranged from managing a national platform for structural creative innovation in education to the development of a broad range of creative tools for learning.

Bas Raijmakers is creative director at STBY, and along with Geke, one of our founders. Like all of our senior design researchers, Bas has been involved with a wide range of different service design projects. He is particularly involved with much of our video work, having developed the ‘Design Documentary’ format himself in his PhD thesis. Bas is a frequent contributor to a range of academic journals (you can find many of his articles in the publications section), and has delivered keynote addresses at a number of service design conferences.

Bas has been working in the internet and media industry as a consultant and research manager since the early nineties. Together with Geke, he co-founded ACS-i media research projects in 1993. After the company grew to a 25 people enterprise, it was acquired by Lost Boys International in Amsterdam, whom Bas joined as Usability Director.

STBY arose at least in part from Bas’ fascination with how people use, understand and appreciate media in contemporary popular culture. Since the rise of public internet his focus has been on new media, ranging from hacker cultures to more mainstream uses of the internet. In his many research projects he has provided evidence that it is the people who use new media offerings, not seldom in unanticipated ways, determine the true meaning and value of it.

Bas holds an MA in Communication Sciences from the University of Amsterdam (1990) and a PhD degree in Design Interactions from the Royal College of Art in London (2007). He currently splits his time between STBY’s London and Amsterdam offices.

An expert in the field of Consumer Behaviour Research and Human-Computer Interaction, Geke also specialises in more general marketing issues and business strategy. A key theme of her work is that the changing expectancies and demands of contemporary consumers put pressure on suppliers to offer their services seamlessly through multiple channels. Consumers appreciate being able to pick and mix from these multichannel service offerings as they like, thereby co-producing the actual service experience. This perspective is often incoporated into the projects Geke leads at STBY as one of our most experience design researchers.

Geke’s approach has been shaped by nearly two decades working on studies that focus upon emerging technologies. She has worked as a consultant and researcher in the internet industry since the early nineties, and in 2007 completed a PhD in Computer Sciences with the Open University (in close collaboration with their Business School).

She currently splits her time between the offices of STBY in Amsterdam and London, and serves as project lead for both corporate and public sector clients.
