As one of the first companies to begin creating projects around the principles of design research and service design, STBY have been intimately involved with the ongoing development of these fields of work. We’ve written papers, magazine and book chapters, founded collaborative and information-sharing networks, and given talks at national and international conferences all across the world. This involvement with design research and service design’s continued evolution keeps us at the forefront of the field, as through our work we’re helping to define it.

Pioneers in the service design community

Founded in 2003, STBY was one of the first agencies to conduct design research projects based on the service design philosophy. Our involvement with the user-centered design community dates back even earlier, as our founders have been active in this field since its gradual emergence at the end of the last century.

Service design isn’t ‘owned’ by any one individual or company; it’s an approach that’s founded on the notion of sharing information and developing approaches collaboratively. The projects that STBY conduct are based around this multi-disciplinary field that we’re helping to co-define. We’re constantly adapting new theories and techniques into our fieldwork, and providing feedback as to what works and what doesn’t via publications and conference presentations.

World class connectors

Collaboration and knowledge sharing is the principle underpinning the Service Design Network Netherlands, which STBY initiated and co-founded in 2008. The network allows companies, students, and individuals interested in service design to connect with each other, share ideas, and help define and refine the processes and tools which the approach employs. We’re also long-standing members of the international Service Design Network. We’re regular contributors to their quarterly magazine, Touchpoint, and we’ve given keynote presentations at conferences in various countries. Through our global design research network REACH we have been engaged in presentations on for service providers as far abroad as Japan and Brazil.

To be at the forefront of service design, we feel that it’s essential to be active members of the community that surrounds it. This means we don’t just apply service design principles – we also help develop and refine them, and thus have an intimate understanding of this rapidly developing field.

Looking to the future: helping companies adopt the service design philosophy

As we work towards our first decade of experience in designing and conducting service design projects, we’re beginning to build up long-term relationships with several companies attempting to re-orientate their research programs around service design principles. With several years of experience in running collaborative workshops with companies eager to learn more about how to use the evocative and engaging research materials we produce, we’re ideally placed to assist those organisations looking to implement their own service design programs.

STBY has a small and highly specialised team of senior researchers and consultants. We have extensive experience with research, strategy, design and project management. We are used to working in multi-disciplinary teams with agile project approaches.

We like to think of ourselves as ‘T-shaped’; each member of our team possess a deep expertise in design research, as well as the knowledge and skills needed to apply this to the broader field of service design.

All of our design researchers bring something different to the table. We connect the experience we have in our respective backgrounds – be this ethnography, film making, branding, change management, or several others – to our deep, mutual understanding of the principles of design research.

This is what allows us to undertake each new project with a creative approach that nevertheless delivers consistent results. Having design researchers with backgrounds in various fields allows the project teams we put together to be tailored around the specific needs of each project. Bespoke projects need bespoke teams.

Our core team:

Our wider network of freelancers:

In very busy periods, or when clients require an expertise outside the scope of our core team and associates, we may complement our project teams with freelancers. We have a wide network of excellent and experienced freelancers in both UK and NL. Freelance staff always works from our offices and under our supervision. We have sufficient infrastructure in place to guarantee smooth and agile operations, and of course exclusive access to data from specific clients.

Hall of fame:

Some people who worked in our core team in the past deserve a special note on this page. They contributed greatly to the projects they collaborated on, and they were a joy to work with. Thank you!

Interns:

STBY have recently hosted interns at both our UK and Amsterdam offices. Though we don’t run a formal internship programme, we’re always interested in hearing from bright, enthusiastic, creative students who want to learn more about design research and service design as part of their studies. This usually takes between 4-6 months, as we like our interns to be involved in all aspects of what we do; once you’re comfortable with the basics, we’ll ask you to contribute to one of our ongoing projects.

If you’d like to know more then send some examples of your work along with a short introduction to mail@stby.eu, and let us know whether you’re interested in interning in Amsterdam or in London. Ideally you should have some background experience in both design and research, but if you think you could contribute in another way then let us know how.

For research focused on issues regarding young people in The Netherlands, we have set up a joint venture with Spunk. This group of young, dynamic and highly talented journalists (16-19 years old) is perfectly suited to engage with other young people and explore their perspectives on various issues. STBY is intensively involved in the preparations for the in-depth data collection and in the analysis of the qualitative results. In shared creative workshop sessions the findings from the interviews are processed into high level consumer insights. To  optimize the communication and understanding of the results, clients are invited to be present in these analytic workshop sessions.

Emilie Randoe (1963) is founder and director of Randoe Verandermanagement, a company specialized in enabling people to organize change in organizations or in networks of co-creation. Randoe Verandermanagement works for a variety of clients in sectors such as education, design, creative industry).
Randoe Verandermanagement discerns three different levels of change: improvement, renewal and transformation. The company offers a specific approach for each level.
All levels of change have in common that you need a story about the necessity for change and about the benefits of the desired results that makes sense to people who are directly concerned by the change. That story can be created by unleashing the tacit knowledge that people within companies have about the needs of clients and about the developments in markets. In order to make the desired change really happen, it is critically important to work at the same time on the question how the organization usually deals with change and to identify mechanisms that effectively prevent change from happening. At this stage people responsible for management and execution within the company need to collaborate closely together and understand their specific roles and perspectives in order to be successful. B y collaborating with STBY, Emilie hopes to contribute to the development of effective teams that can reach their goals and possibly even more than that.
