The beautiful room, generously offered to us by the Waag Society, was packed with people from various backgrounds (agencies, clients, academia).

We started the session with brief presentations by Arne van Oosterom (DesignThinkers), Joost Holthuis (EdenSpiekermann), Marcel Zwiers (31Volts), Bas Raijmakers (STBY) and Dick van Dijk (Waag Society). They talked about issues they encounter in their current practice as a service designer. Some of these issues touched on methodology, others on client relationships or the evolution of the role of a service designer in subsequent stages of service design projects. The discussions after each presentation and at the end of the session were very lively.

It is clear that these kind of sessions are very welcome. We discussed the option that more people in the network can take the initiative to organise Service Design Thinks sessions. It would be great to have one every two months. The location can vary according to who is organising it. It does not have to be in Amsterdam. Rotterdam and Amersfoort were mentioned as well. Great!

We finally managed to sit down together for a day and compile a coherent website for the Dutch Service Design Network. The design had been prepared by EdenSpiekermann for a while already, but we were all too busy on projects to get the content sorted. We are pleased to have made a good start now. The site has links to many other resources on Service Design. This was a joint effort by 31Volts, EdenSpiekermann and STBY, but it is meant to be a shared platform for the wider network. Let us know if you have any further suggestions on news/activities that should be announced here.

Bas was invited to sit on the Programme Board of the next Service Design Network conference (SDNC10) and took part in a first meeting in Koeln this weekend. Others in the board are: prof. Birgit Mager, Felix Somerville-Scharf (Volkswagen), Elena Pacenti (Domus Academy), Arne van Oosterom (Design Thinkers), Satu Miettinem (Kuopio), Asier Péréz (Funky Projects) and Mark Stickdorn (Management Center Innsbruck). We discussed at length how we can involve the international service design community in the programming of the conference and decided that we will use social media where possible to do so. Berlin will be the city where the conference is held, probably in October (the precise date is to be announced shortly by SDN.) This will be initiated by calls for contributions and collaborations that will be sent out in due time using several channels. We will post them here too.

About sixty representatives, researchers, sociologists and creatives met up at La Boate, in Marseille, to invent tools for tomorrow’s public policies, and imagine the future of the 26 french regions. Orchestrated by the 27th region, this event intended to precede the annual «Congrès des Régions» with a creative push.
This backcasting exercice started with a TV news bulletin from 2028, announcing, amongst other things, the visit of elected members from le Grand Paris to le Plateau des 1000 Vaches (region Limousin), to study new forms of rural social innovation. We also celebrate the 10th birthday of the first ‘multimodal food pole’: the time when local food growing associations were marginals is definitely over.
Those stories tackle different social and economic issues in which the regions have a crucial role to play: education, citizenship, governancy, participation… but also energy, food, transport, infrastructure, technologies. How did that happen? From this vision of a desirable future, the game for the participants was to propose three innovations to make it possible, in a perspective of 5, 10 or 20 years.

After several hours of intense debate, meters of paper covered with post-its and photo-montages, about thirty ideas were presented, including… a Tour de France for the elected representatives, going in «residence» in other territories. A «trans-regional» passeport, reshaping citizenship and public involvement on a local (trans-regional) scale. A welcome kit for new habitants in rural areas…

The day was also the occasion to make a half way bilan of Territoire en résidence: a program of local experimentations, which the 27th region started in november 2008. So far, 7 residences have been realised, asking a pluri-disciplinary team (designers, ethnographers, architects, local stakehloders…) to work for 3 weeks in a place or an institution that represent a specific challenge for the region, and to propose several leads of action. The residences are constantly documented on a blog. And there is also video on You Tube about the event.

To celebrate its 15th anniversary, The Waag Society in Amsterdam organised a ‘Socratic Conversation on Design for Society on 15 December. Bas was one of the guest speakers invited to take part in this conversation. The other speakers were Marleen Stikker and Caroline Nevejan, the two founders of Waag Society, and also Gerard van Oortmerssen, Robert Zwijnberg en Karin Spaink. Topics that were discussed were: what is the specific role of design in relation to science, politics and technology; And how to ensure the trust needed for reciprocity and tranparancy?

On 8 December Geke was one of the round-table moderators at the annual Innovation Lecture, organised by the Dutch Ministery of Economic Affairs. The topic of this most recent Innovation Lecture was Service Innovation. Jeneanne Rae (Peer Insight) was invited as the keynote speaker. She gave a good overview of the need for Service Innovation, and the socio-economic trends that explain the background for this need. She stressed the importance of developing new business models and making use of customer insights. She also pointed out some of the current main inhibitors of service innovation, such as the lack of strategic focus on and funding for service related R&D, and the weakness of effective service delivery. In this respect the most interesting concept she discussed was the so-called ‘O-gap’.

The O-gap is the gap between the development phase and the implementation phase of new services. Many organisations seem to have trouble to make the transition from the dynamic momentum of innovative pilot projects with small teams to the fully integrated and sustainable implementation of the delivery of the new services by many people throughout the organisation. This seems to be one of the major challenges in service innovation today. We recognise this difficulty, and have advised clients to engage change managers in the innovation process.

The Dutch Minister of Economic Affairs, Mrs. Van der Hoeven, also presented two interesting talks to kick-off and wrap up the Innovation Lecture. She stressed the importance of finding the right balance between strategy/ratio/discipline and exploration/creativity/imagination. And, to put her foot where her mouth is, she announced the set-up of a ‘DO-tank’, as opposed to Think-tank, where new ideas can be tried and tested.

The Ministery of Economic Affairs has just published a report to summarise the presentations and discussions during the Innovation Lecture. You can download the pdf here: InnovationLecture 2009. The text is in Dutch, sorry (but everyone should be able to appreciate the nice picture of Geke on page 18 ).
